Specific Bot Rules

Generated robots.txt

User-agent: *
Allow: /

Copy this text and save it as a file named robots.txt. Upload this file to the root directory of your website (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt).

What is a Robots.txt File?

A robots.txt file is a simple text document placed in the root directory of your website. It uses the Robots Exclusion Protocol to communicate with web crawlers (like Googlebot) and tell them which pages or files they can or cannot request from your site.

Managing Crawl Budget

Google allocates a specific "crawl budget" to your website—the number of pages it is willing to crawl within a timeframe. If Google wastes this budget crawling useless pages (like internal search results, admin dashboards, or duplicate tag pages), your important content might not get indexed quickly.

By aggressively disallowing low-value directories in your robots.txt file, you force search engines to focus entirely on your high-value pages, improving overall SEO performance.

Disallow vs. NoIndex

It is crucial to understand that robots.txt is not an indexing control mechanism.

  • Disallow: Tells Google "Do not crawl this link." However, if a page is linked from somewhere else, it can still appear in search results without a description.
  • NoIndex: A meta tag placed in the HTML of the page that tells Google "Do not show this in search results at all." If you want a page hidden completely, use noindex, not robots.txt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I put the robots.txt file?

It must be placed in the top-level directory (root) of your web server. If your website is www.example.com, the file must be accessible at exactly www.example.com/robots.txt.

Does Disallow mean the page won't appear in Google?

No. A Disallow directive prevents Google from crawling the contents of the page. However, if other websites link to that page, Google might still index the URL itself (without knowing what's on the page). To remove a page entirely from Google, use a noindex meta tag.

What happens if I don't have a robots.txt file?

If you don't have one, search engine bots will assume that everything on your website is fully allowed to be crawled and indexed. While this is fine for very small sites, larger sites risk wasting their crawl budget on unimportant pages.
